You Had Weight Loss Surgery, Now What? 5 Tips to Get Lasting Results

YOU DID IT! You had weight loss surgery. You have goals of being more active, lowering your risk for diabetes and increasing your quality of life. GOOD FOR YOU!

Weight loss surgery is a life-changing event! No matter if it’s a gastric sleeve, LapBand or other procedure – you want to lose the weight you carry. The hard part – keeping it off! Here are some tips for getting lasting results after bariatric surgery:

  1. Friends & Family
Get the support you need to focus on your new lifestyle. You want lasting results and you have made a commitment to yourself. Making sure friends and family hold you accountable is a HUGE part of your success. Tell them your goals, ask them to remind you of them and join you in living a healthier lifestyle.
  2. Healthy Eating
You have to rethink the way you eat. Prior to weight loss surgery you probably didn’t give this much thought. Learning portion control, stocking up on foods with nutrients, increasing your protein intake!

You want lasting results – you need lasting effort. We find that once patients reach their weight goal and go into maintenance mood, the healthy eating really diminishes. This is in YOUR control! Through our After Care Program Dr. Carter helps our patients learn proper nutrition and control.

  3. Living Active
Prior to weight loss surgery, your weight probably held you back from some of the activities you wanted to do. Do them! Try new things. Some ways to stick to staying active:
    – Make it a Social Hour: Invite Friends to Join You! Make it an regular hangout session at a fitness class or at the park.
    – Mix It Up: Get out there and try different activities….you may find something you love!
    – Make it Easy: Eliminate your excuses! Keep walking shoes at work so you can get in some extra steps, sleep in your workout clothes so you can get right up and out.
    – Find something you love! Living an active lifestyle is easy if you find something you enjoy.
  4. Follow Up
Your bariatric surgeon should be your biggest fan! The first year after weight loss surgery you should follow up with your doctor every 4 – 6 weeks to track progress. Even after your first year, following up with your surgeon is key to success!

Dr. Carter thinks this is so critical to weight loss success he’s developed an Aftercare Program. He is the biggest fan of all his patients and his primary goal is to help increase your quality of life through weigh loss.

  5. Remember Why You Started
Stick up an old picture of yourself. Keep a pair of those pants that you can’t believe you once fit in to. These are simple reminders that can help remind you of how far you’ve come!

Losing weight is NOT a sprint–it is a MARATHON! You must develop the same good habits day after day, month after month, and year after year to maintain your journey. One of the hardest things you will ever do is lose the weight and maintain the lost. We are here to make sure that happens.
